2020-21 CAP Indy Sign
The CAP Indy signage project emerged as a student led design build from a branding campaign undertaken by the University for the new Ball State Indianapolis Center. The proposed signage leverages existing infrastructure in front of the building to attach a new sign incorporating the Universities existing branding while simultaneously offering a unique and sculptural installation at the foot of Washington Street. The signage proudly announces the Universities presence in Indianapolis. Two skins of perforated metal attach to a steel frame anchored to existing 8” concrete walls. The interplay of the two surfaces creates a dynamic and visually kinetic “moiré” pattern as one moves past the sign, addressing the condition of both the pedestrian and the motorist. The existing branding for both the University and College of Architecture and Planning are incorporated into this dynamic composition. This lends consistency and coherence to University branding while simultaneously announcing the arrival of something new and evolving. The sign is designed, permitted, fabricated, and installed by two separate teams of Ball State students working over the course of three semesters and through the COVID pandemic.
